Father’s Day Activities

Father’s Day in the US is June 21st. Are you ready yet? Here are some ideas to make this day special:

Let Dad Sleep In – Yes, you can give him breakfast in bed, but since many fathers have to wake up early, let him sleep in one day. If not, then go ahead and let the kids jump on the bed!

Breakfast for Champions – Forget about diets, cholestorol and what is healthy. Give him bacon, pancakes, biscuts and gravy and more bacon. Let him eat his favorite foods and lots of it.

Handmade Stuff – Don’t let them fool you, Dads love to see what their children make. Help them make a card, picture or cozy for their soda cans. Let them put their special touches into their work and you’ll see him beaming ear to ear.

Dinner Out or In – Let him decide if he wants to go out to eat, get take out or have a homemade meal. It’s his day after all.

Television Remote Ownership – Give in and let him have the remote for the day. I’m not sure if he’ll chose sports, kungfu movies or the reruns of soap operas. But, I’m sure he’ll be very pleased with being able to switch channels or just watching what he wants.

What are some of the things you do for your fathers on his special day? Do you buy presents?

Savings For The Summer

It’s almost that time of year! Summer is fast approaching. The weather may be getting hot, but our budget is still getting hit. With our youngest daughter being off from school we want to find things to do as a family but be as budget conscious as possible.

  • Free Activities: We love going to the park, having picnics, going to the beach, looking for neighborhood events like children’s fairs, art festivals, etc. Even at free activities, there will be items for sale, so make a budget in advance. If your children are old enough, let them know how much they can spend for themselves.
  • Low Cost Events: I scan the newspaper and local TV news to learn about discount admissions to museums, movies, state parks, etc.
  • Free Family Time: Make a normal family time special. If you have a game night, do something new to make it more exciting. Turn it into a tropical theme. Everyone wears bathing suits, put down a some beach towels, find some sand toys and clean sea shells and put on tropical music. Then play your games on your own family beach indoors!
  • Purchase a 2009 Entertainment Book for half price to get savings on eating out, groceries, movies and much more. If you are taking a vacation, you can purchase one for that area to take along with you and keep the savings going while you’re away.

A Glimpse of My Family

My family is my life. They are keep me going, make me happy, help me want to strive to be a better person and keep myself as healthy as possible. I do these things for myself too, but knowing that they are the most positive force in my life is the key to endeavor on.

If you’re a mother and/or a wife, you most likely understand me. But, sadly, maybe you don’t. Maybe you put others things first, or are just overwhelmed with it all. I hope that I can show you a view of what my family life is all about and hopefully you can set yourself off in a more positive direction.

Proud Family

F un – We attempt to do fun things together. Spending time together, even if it’s just talking, reading silently together or eating dinner together is a priority. It doesn’t have to cost money and can even be something as silly as telling old stories that we’ve heard a thousand times before, but still keep us in stitches.

img_2230

A lways stick up for each other – We are our best allies. Even if one of us has done something wrong, we (my husband and myself) may punish or at least point out the offense if it’s something small, but we help each other through the tough times. We know that forgiveness is always possible. That’s unconditional love. Forgiveness doesn’t mean letting someone get away with their wrong, but forgiving them from our hearts.

M eeting friends – We make an effort to get to know each other’s friends. Our home is open to our children’s friends. We love to spend time with them, but not get in the way. We do give each other space, but it’s important for our children to feel comfortable bringing their friends to us. This helps them to feel comfortable telling us about their problems and worries.

friends

I mportant – We work at making everyone feel important to gain self-esteem. This is done in many ways but one of the ways that work best for us is providing responsibilities. They are not only chores, but things such as doing our best at school and work  and doing our best at being kind and courteous.

img_0833

L ove – You were expecting that weren’t you? This is the most important ingredient in my family. We may not like each other all the time, but we always love each other. We try to show it every day in different ways. We say it every day, give hugs and kisses and help our children see that we (my husband and I) love each other too.

Y es – Say it as often as possible! Now it doesn’t mean that we give in to everything. In fact we are very strict parents. But, if one of our children asks to sleep over a friend’s house and we’ve never met the parents, instead of saying “no” we would say something like, “How’s about we go out to the park with your friend and her parents instead?” If we’re asked about doing anything educational, it’s yes! We think of ways to be more positive to each other all the time.

The Family That Disney’s Together Stays Together

We’re having a blast this week at Disney World. It truly is the happiest place on earth. Even though it’s very crowded because of Spring Break, we are enjoying the time together.

We took a break to wind down at the Crystal Palace and have a good meal. Let me tell you, the food there is some of the best at Magic Kingdom, even at Disney World. And of course, who can resist Winnie the Pooh and Piglet?

Easter Basket Toys

Here are some cute toys that will fit into your child’s Easter Basket and put a big smile on their face:

Toddlers will get a kick out of the Easter Potato Head, Spud Bunny. He is made for children ages 2 and older. This Ages and Stages toy from Playschool is adorable, helps your child be creative and use their imagination. As with all the  Potato Heads, there are individual parts to attach to his body. For Spud Bunny there’s bunny ears, bunny shoes, a tail and a pink nose. Of course all the parts can be stored in the compartment under the body. No need to worry about lost parts. It fits into a large Easter basket. Make it the main toy, add some candy and you’re all set.

There are bunnies for boys and girls. The difference is the in the color of the ears, nose and small nose on the slippers.  Once you buy one of these toys, you can just buy the sets of “Parts and Pieces”  This gift can start a collection for your child.

Littlest Pet Shop toys are really hot. Big and little girls collect them. They are made for Ages 4 and up. But my 10 year old thinks they are “the cutest”. And because there’s an online world for them, more tech savvy girls are collecting them. You can buy a two set package like this one here. This one is “Sportiest” and there are other categories like Funniest, Sassiest, Messiest. You can buy play sets, accessories and even digital toys. Start off Easter and Spring with something brand new for them to get interested in and begin collecting. You’ll make your daughter’s day!

Involving Your Children in Vacation Plans

We are Disney fanatics who are lucky enough to live close to Disney World so we can go quite often. We also are Disney Vacation Club owners so it makes it even easier to vacation there or at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort. But after going there every year for two long trips and several short ones for the past 10 years even I want a change.

My daughter is very interested in weather. She watches our local forecast a few times a day and the national one at least once a day. She enjoys seeing the odd weather patterns, like tornadoes, hurricanes, and her all time favorite, snow storms.

Poor child who was born and raised in Florida has never seen snow. She’s been asking for a few years to go somewhere so she can see it for herself. I, my husband and her discussed traveling up to Niagra Falls, New York, NYC and other places where she can take part in new adventures and actually see and feel snow.

We used a map, the internet, and our DVC site to see what hotels we can stay at. We’ve looked at catalogs and websites to find cold weather clothing. I had to explain to her what Icebreaker Clothing is. She helped with all of the planning so it’s become something to really look forward to. She’s also learning the cost of the trip, how long it will take to drive, geography and lots more. We’re still planning as we won’t be able to go until either the end of this year or the beginning of next year. I’ll keep you posted as we continue this journey.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day With Your Children

Valentine’s Day doesn’t only have to be about romantic love. If you have children, why not show them you love them too? No need to buy gifts or spend any money on them. I feel there’s too much of that happening with holidays now anyway. There’s other ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your children:

  1. Make some decorations together – A Laced Heart,  A Cut-Out Paper Heart and Valentine Paper Chains. Then have fun hanging them up around your home.
  2. Printable Valentine’s Day cards are available for school, for teachers, and for each other.
  3. pancakes

  4. Make and eat some heart shaped food – Pancakes with Maple and Raspberry Sauce, pizza, cut up sandwiches using a SweetBytes Sandwich Crust Cutter- Heart Shape
  5. Spend some time together reading a book, watching a movie like Lady and the Tramp (50th Anniversary Edition), or
just talking. Be sure to cuddle!

Super Bowl Party For Your Children

So you’re having a Super Bowl party? Or maybe you’re attending one. Want some ideas to keep the children happy, busy and eating while you have fun too? It’s possible for adults to include children in their party if it’s not going to be too rowdy. Let your kids start to learn about one of the biggest sporting events in the United States.

super-bowl

Where?

  1. If there are very young children or infants you probably want to keep the children in the same room as the adults. This is especially true if there are older children and younger children, unless there is someone old enough and responsible enough to be a paid babysitter in that room.
  2. If the children are about the same age and able to get along, you can have them in a room that is next to your party room. The adults take turns keeping an eye on them.
  3. Be sure the room is child proofed. If possible a play room is best. If not, make it as wide open as possible.

What To Do?

  1. Let them make their own banners or flags for the team they are routing for. All you need is construction paper, markers, glue sticks and a copy of the Arizona Cardinals Logo and the Pittsburgh Steelers Logo.
  2. Provide an Inflatable Football Beach Ball or balloons and provide some time for the children to have a short time for a football toss.
  3. Play “hot football” game – the same as hot potato but using a football.
  4. Decorate cookies or cake with icing, candy, etc. using football shapes, logos, goal posts, etc.
  5. Provide prizes for the games, like small candies, $1 store toys especially related to football and cheer leading.

What To Eat?

  1. Provide juice, water and milk for the children to drink.
  2. Provide some healthy alternatives such as cut up fruit, cheese cubes, crackers, pretzels, etc.
  3. Most children like hot dogs, macaroni and cheese and pizza. Have a lot of those foods on hand.
  4. For snacks, be sure to separate the spicy foods so that children don’t eat them by accident.
  5. For desserts, the decorated cookies and/or cake or even cupcakes are just perfect.
  6. Be sure to keep candy and snacks in a different room so that the children don’t eat too much.

What are some of the things that you do for Super Bowl Sunday for your children?

The Inauguration and Your Children

This year’s Inauguration will be held this Tuesday, January 20th. There are many events that can be viewed on television and on the web. I hope that you will educate your child about the meaning of this day and do something together.

Keep Santa Alive

Does it harm a child to believe in Santa? For many of us, those days are the happiest we have had. The excitement and wonder of the wonders of Santa, Mrs. Claus, the Elves, the Reindeer, etc. kept us waiting in anticipation for weeks. We learned all of the stories about Santa Claus and watched cartoons and movies about him. We even read or had our family read books about him to us.

When we grew up and learned the truth for some of us it was a sad time, but for most of us we felt that we had outwitted our parents. For me it was a mixture of the two. I had a feeling for a while and then as children at school began to nudge me along I felt compelled to check things out for myself.

So I looked through our house for where my parents could have hidden presents. It took me days to find them, but when I did I felt as if someone had punched me in the stomach. Were my parents trying to trick me? All this time I believed and it was all a fake? When I asked my mother about Santa, she continued to reply with her normal answers. But I prodded her and she soon knew I suspected something.

That’s when she told me the whole story. But the way she told me lessened the blow. It wasn’t a trick, it was something parents did to help children have fun and to teach them about giving. Now it was my turn to help her and my Dad to keep Santa alive for my younger sister and for all other younger children.

I then felt grown up and wanted to keep Santa’s spirit going as much as I could. I became an actor in the story and loved every minute. I made the decision to keep Santa alive for my children as long as possible too. My 8 year old still believes.

We help her by having her write a letter to Santa and make sure that she writes it politely. She visits him and reads about him. Now she can see his flight on the the internet thanks to NORAD. We put out cookies and milk for Santa and carrots for the reindeer.

How do you feel about the story of Santa and your children? What are some traditions you keep to keep Santa alive?
